Research carried out in Germany has shown that acupuncture may help relieve tension headaches and migraines.<\/p>\n

The NCCIH note that it has been proven to help in cases of:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n
• Low back pain<\/li>\n
• Neck pain<\/li>\n
• Osteoarthritis<\/li>\n
• Knee pain<\/li>\n
• Headache and migraine<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

  They list additional disorders that may benefit from acupuncture, but which require further scientific confirmation.<\/p>\n

  In 2003, the World Health Organization (WHO) listed a number of conditions in which they say acupuncture has been proven effective.<\/p>\n

  These include:<\/strong><\/p>\n

  \n
  • High and low blood pressure<\/li>\n
  • Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting<\/li>\n
  • Some gastric conditions, including peptic ulcer<\/li>\n
  • Painful periods<\/li>\n
  • Dysentery<\/li>\n
  • Allergic rhinitis<\/li>\n
  • Facial pain<\/li>\n
  • Morning sickness<\/li>\n
  • Rheumatoid arthritis<\/li>\n
  • Sprains<\/li>\n
  • Tennis elbow<\/li>\n
  • Sciatica<\/li>\n
  • Dental pain<\/li>\n
  • Reducing the risk of stroke<\/li>\n
  • inducing labor<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Other conditions for which the WHO say that acupuncture may help but more evidence is needed include:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    • Fibromyalgia<\/li>\n
    • Neuralgia<\/li>\n
    • Post-operative convalescence<\/li>\n
    • Substance, tobaccor and alcohol dependence<\/li>\n
    • Spine pain<\/li>\n
    • Stiff neck<\/li>\n
    • Vascular dementia<\/li>\n
    • Whooping cough, or pertussis<\/li>\n
    • Tourette syndrome<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      The WHO also suggest that it may help treat a number of infections, including some urinary tract infections and epidemic hemorrhagic fever.<\/p>\n

      They point out, however, that “only national health authorities can determine the diseases, symptoms, and conditions for which acupuncture treatment can be recommended.”<\/p>\n

      Benefits<\/strong>
      \nAcupuncture can be beneficial in that:<\/p>\n

      \n
      • Performed correctly, it is safe.<\/li>\n
      • There are very few side effects.<\/li>\n
      • It can be effectively combined with other treatments.<\/li>\n
      • It can control some types of pain.<\/li>\n
      • It may help patients for whom pain medications are not suitable.<\/li>\n
